teach them the physics you want, then let them propagate forward in time, 2020

python code sourced from the public library GIZMO, and used by astronomers to

construct massive galaxy simulations.

here you will find a series of helpful notes in the structure of a galaxy.

humans lack the capacity to run code. it is not baked into our structure. the word ‘run’ has the highest number of meanings in the oxford english dictionary. as a verb it has six hundred and forty-five. according to the OED, in computing ‘to run’ means to propagate forward in time, to make things go, to execute a program, to operate correctly. this piece does not run code, nor is it presented in the way code might normally be presented by a programmer. it has been compressed, with the majority of the programmers blanks and white space removed. in developing code readability is key, where blanks and white space play a big role in creating this readability. these two methods have been discarded by the artist in favor of aesthetics. this is unacceptable in programming, but the artist is not a programmer.

this piece is currently ongoing. it's beginnings featured in my solo show at custom house gallery and studios, in westport, county mayo, republic of ireland in 2021
