an overwhelming weight of uncertainty drives the desire for an immediate solution. what if heavenly guidance were as obtainable as a blue flower? for heinrich, in the 19th century german romantic story 'heinrich von ofterdingen' by novalis, certainty by heavenly guidance for a boy on the cusp of adulthood and riddled with uncertainty takes the form of a blue flower, a flower that does not actually exist in his reality. nor does it exist in ours. these images display a fantastical portrayal of an otherwise mundane, everyday struggle for certainty in life. the heinrichs in my portraiture series outrun one another in order to obtain a fake blue flower, where the promise of certainty in reality is as non-existent as the flower that represents it.
